Transdisciplinary research teams operate in what have been referred to as VUCA contexts—settings that are volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (McCausland and Martin 2001). Inter- and transdisciplinary research is volatile in that voluminous information may be available for any particular problem, but it is rarely precisely the right information, and new information is constantly appearing from many directions.

The link between systemic racism and homelessness is clear, not just to researchers and officials who have acknowledged the problem, but also to anyone walking or driving along Los Angeles’s sidewalks or parks. Transdisciplinary research and innovation is about the practises that are required to address complex societal problems. There are many definitions of transdisciplinary research and innovation and how to do it, but a general consensus is that it has the following characteristics: In transdisciplinary research, investigators step outside the boundaries of their known areas of inquiry to create “its own intellectual space” (Figure 3; McGregor, 2004, p. 2). The goal of this mode is to truly blend different perspectives so as to understand scientific questions and problems in their complexity rather than just addressing pieces of them.

Transdisciplinary research is a new field of research emerging in the ‘knowledge society’, which links science and policy to address issues such as environmental degradation, new technologies, public health and social change. Transdisciplinary Research What is Transdisciplinary Research? The terms ‘multidisciplinary,’ ‘interdisciplinary’, and ‘transdisciplinary’ are all used in the context of collaborative scientific research that both leverages and benefits from multiple perspectives.

The terms multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary are increasingly used in the literature, but are ambiguously defined and interchangeably used. Transdisciplinary Research is defined as research efforts conducted by investigators from different disciplines working jointly to create new conceptual, theoretical, methodological, and translational innovations that integrate and move beyond discipline-specific approaches to address a common problem.

Lakehead 2013 - A brief look at the differences between multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary.

Transdisciplinary research involves a range of approaches that may see the breaking down of disciplinary boundaries, the merging of existing disciplines and the introduction of non-disciplinary knowledge from external stakeholders. The terms interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary describe research efforts that integrate a variety of academic perspectives with nonacademic perspectives of other stakeholders . These types of diverse, collaborative efforts allow the detection, investigation, anticipation, and potential prediction of outbreak events—as well as responses to those events. do transdisciplinary research and make it possible to familiarize oneself with key components and guiding principles is missing. Such synthesis would have the addi-tional obligation (apart from the benefit of compilation) to review and scrutinize the empirical evidence for such guidelines of transdisciplinary research (Klein 2008; Wiek 2009). Transdisciplinary research is seen as the most integrative form of cross-disciplinary research (Czajkowski et al., 2016) that was first created to solve complex problems in environmental sustainability (Berger-González et al., 2016) and is used in environment and health research, such as EcoHealth approaches (Buse et al., 2018).

In 1994, Gibbons et al. (1994) introduced their concept of Mode 2 research as a strongly contextualized research practice in a particular field of application, characterized by heterogeneity, social accountability, reflexivity and transdisciplinarity (1994). Also from a meta-level, transdisciplinary researchers can analyze and compare processes and thus try to advance the field of innovation studies in the land use context.Being aware of the purpose of each other’s methods, theories, and perspectives has definitely helped me become a better researcher. This paper uses three avenues to advance and clarify our understanding of transdisciplinarity. Firstly, we survey the theoretical literature and identify key characteristics used by authors in the field to distinguish transdisciplinarity from related research approaches.
